Gadgets & Gizmos in Fitness

Very often, I hear, “Ah, man! I forgot to start my workout on my watch!” It makes them feel like they must either start their workout over, or it “doesn’t count.” There are so many cool gadgets that help us in our fitness journey. I have a few fitness trackers and equipment to talk to you about today. What you use depends on your sports, preferences and fitness goals.

Fitness Trackers & Watches

Apple Watch: This is your text and message-capable, step-tracking, exercise-tracking, all-around fitness watch. This watch is great for everyday use, plus it has robust fitness tracking. You have different choices for what workout you are tracking, and it measures your heart rate. Apple even has life-saving features, such as ECG for detecting atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea detection. One other neat feature: it detects if you have fallen. You also are directly connected to your iPhone for mapping walks or runs. Many like the wearability of it and the array of bands that are sweat-proof and comfortable.

Garmin Forerunner Watch: This gadget is especially handy for runners and has a long-lasting battery life — it lasts two weeks! This fitness tracker has all that the Apple Watch has, as well as a built-in GPS to track your route, distance, pace, laps, etc. It also has a safety feature: you can send your location to an emergency contact if you are running solo.

Oura Ring: If you want a comfortable device for tracking sleep and restfulness, the Oura Ring is right for you. It also automatically tracks and detects activities even without “starting a workout.” It is neat to note that the Oura Ring provides insights into stress, resilience, illness and recovery needs. The battery lasts longer than Apple’s does.

Whoop Wearable: This is another gadget that is wearable and comfortable without being distracting. You can check your health status on the app, and this wearable is built to be worn all the time. It tracks and analyzes biometric data to see how the body responds to daily activity and offers recommendations for performance and well-being.

Gadgets in the Fitness Center

Power Plate: Many members ask me what this piece of equipment does and how it works. The Power Plate is a medical grade piece of equipment, used by sports performance centers and in physical therapy settings. This machine activates the body’s natural reflexive response to vibration. It helps with flexibility, as the vibration allows muscles to relax to stretch further; it enables the body to have better blood flow and assists in lymphatic drainage; it enhances balance and creates more caloric burn; it increases bone density, because vibration is how the muscles “hug” the bones to strengthen them; and the vibration creates more brain stimulation as well. There are meta-analysis studies on the effects of the Power Plate. A variety of programs allows for what the client wants, such as workouts, stretching and massage to play, feel or balance better, and it’s a great warm-up or cool-down for tennis, pickleball or golf. One of our trainers would be happy to show you how this amazing machine works!

Foam Rollers & Release Balls: If you haven’t tried myofascial release, now is the best time and it is never too late to try! The foam roller can release tension in the muscle and fascial system. Myofascial release is proven to help the body move better if it is done correctly. There are trigger points in the body that help release key areas. The release ball is great for releasing pinpoint areas, such as the glutes, between the shoulder blades or the pectoralis (chest) muscles. I have the SPINEFITTER and the Chirp Wheels in my office for members’ use as well.

Stretch Assistance: Other equipment here at the Fitness Center includes the Precor Stretch, which allows you to rock forward and backward into stretch positions that might not be as accessible on the floor, and the TRX strap, which is a system that hangs from a higher source — one uses the handles to hang into a back and shoulder stretch or open up the chest and shoulders. The TRX can be used for an entire workout.

Our trainers at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch are happy to design a workout that incorporates more stretching and mobility so you can continue to work out injury free!
