From the moment we arrived, it was clear this would be a special experience. Planning the trip had been seamless thanks to Lisa, whose warm personality and cheerful energy set the tone before we even unpacked. Whether answering questions, coordinating details, or greeting guests with a smile, she made everyone feel instantly at home.

After an easy drive from Cordillera Ranch, we settled into our accommodations while the horses relaxed in their spacious runs. But this was no ordinary horse retreat. The ranch’s incredible exotic animals immediately added an unexpected twist to the adventure. Our horses were introduced to a zebra affectionately named “Fred” and an emu dubbed “Edgar.” At first, the encounters were met with wide eyes and cautious curiosity, but before long both horses and riders settled into ranch life together, realizing these unusual neighbors were friendly additions to the experience rather than something to fear.

Evenings at Y.O. Ranch were filled with laughter and camaraderie. Guests gathered for pool, shuffleboard and lively games of Mexican Train dominoes before heading to dinner each night. Meals were exceptional from start to finish, with delicious options for everyone, including thoughtful vegetarian selections that impressed the entire group.

Although Friday’s forecast threatened heavy rainstorms, not even the weather could dampen the spirit of the weekend. Guests enjoyed a relaxed morning with breakfast, games and cozy conversation before spending the afternoon at a delightful sip-and-paint session decorating clay pots. Kesley kept spirits high and glasses full, turning a rainy afternoon into one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Meanwhile, the horses enjoyed turnout in beautiful grassy paddocks where they could stretch, graze, and relax.

With more than 12,000 acres of breathtaking terrain waiting to be explored, anticipation built for the weekend’s trail rides. Saturday morning began with breakfast before everyone saddled up and headed out by 9:30am alongside guide Nicole, whose knowledge and enthusiasm made the ride even more enjoyable. Riders spent nearly two hours winding through the stunning Hill Country landscape, soaking in scenic vistas and reconnecting with nature from horseback.

The adventure continued after lunch with an unforgettable safari tour led by Kesley. Guests learned fascinating details about the ranch’s exotic wildlife while feeding giraffes and camels directly from their hands. Kesley’s passion for the animals was contagious, and her knowledge transformed the tour into an experience that was both educational and magical.

As if the day had not already been perfect, dinner was served early so everyone could saddle up once more for a sunset ride across the ranch. Golden light stretched across the rolling terrain as horses and riders made memories few would soon forget.

Sunday brought another incredible morning ride through a different section of the ranch, offering entirely new scenery and fresh adventures. Later in the day, the group visited the ranch museum, where history came alive through Texas Ranger artifacts, frontier memorabilia, longhorn bloodline exhibits and stories of the legendary Schreiner family dynasty. Jimmy ensured every guest was entertained and engaged, making sure there was never a dull moment throughout the weekend.
