For more than a decade Dickens on Main has become a Boerne staple and has delivered a cheerful holiday event for children and adults alike. No matter your preference for holiday festivities, there’s something for everyone throughout these two weekends. This year, the City of Boerne, Boerne Business Alliance, Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce, and Hill Country Council for the Arts have crafted a 2013 Christmas celebration with even more festive entertainment, family fun, children’s activities and decor showcasing Boerne’s heritage and local retailers along the Hill Country Mile.

This year’s Dickens on Main will be a two-weekend celebration.  Fire & Ice Weekend will light up the town Nov. 29-30 and O Tannenbaum Weekend will continue on Dec. 6-7. Bundle up and head to Main Street for a family-friendly festival full of lighting ceremonies, community plays, holiday tunes, snow shows, fire pits, a Christmas parade and more!

Also, don’t forget the shopping. Enjoy the quaint shops along Main Street and shop the new Dickens Artisan Market which will feature unique handmade crafts and gifts.

Fire & Ice Weekend, will feature a holiday lighting ceremony at Boerne’s Main Plaza at 6 p.m.

Stay in the spirit of welcoming guests while local businesses, school theaters and community theater groups reenact Charles Dickens’ Christmas classics with traditional period costumes.

Holiday shoppers can participate in the Stocking Stroll, enjoying a stroll down Main Street while each participating store shares special gifts. Stockings will be filled while snagging great gifts along the way.

Both evenings of Fire & Ice Weekend, holiday shoppers and participants will have a special opportunity to see three Bah Humbug: “A One Man Christmas Carol” performances. This is a season favorite with an amazing twist — one actor plays all the roles from Scrooge to Tiny Tim in this magical retelling of the famed holiday classic.

As promised, keep an eye out for ice sculptors skillfully sawing, chiseling, scraping and molding pieces of block ice into works of frosty perfection, and HeartFire’s talented team of fire entertainers as they put on a toasty performance worthy of a fantastic holiday celebration.

This first Saturday of December sets the stage for two fan-favorite holiday parades that promise nothing but fun for the whole family. Compete in the annual Pet Parade where valuable prizes will be awarded for best costume, smartest and most well behaved, and looks most like their owner. Later in the evening, The Weihnachts Parade, Boerne’s twinkling lighted Christmas custom, will continue its long-standing tradition as one of Boerne’s most cherished activities at Dickens on Main, and will be emceed by WOAI news anchor of “News 4 Today” Leslie Bohl and Morning Meteorologist Albert Flores.

Stroll along the Tannenbaum Trail decorating the banks of the Cibolo Creek on Boerne’s River Road Park. A decorative assortment of Christmas trees provided by local businesses, donors and organizations will be displayed along the route and warm holiday refreshments will be available.

All ages can watch any of the snow shows at Snow on Main Street each evening of Dickens on Main. And what better way to celebrate than with the Christmas man himself — Santa Claus! Each evening, Santa will greet children, young and old, on the Christmas lit grounds of the Little Nature Store.

The smell of burning firewood and the warmth of a fire will surely get you in the spirit as you savor the smell of roasting chestnuts and warm up while listening to holiday music from the Boerne Village Band.

Professional entertainers, ensembles from local schools, community carolers and local singer-songwriters will entertain both weekends with festive tunes.

With the twinkling of festival trees, crackling of fire baskets along the Cibolo Creek and the theatrical excitement of Dickens Village, Dickens on Main will be the holiday celebration of the year. Come celebrate Christmas with the City of Boerne and Boerne Business Alliance and create family traditions of jubilee!

Where Do You Spend Your Time?

I recently read a story retold by the father of a young family of three that included himself, his wife and their young daughter.
