A New Season for Wine at Cordillera Ranch

About Your assistant Wine Specialist

For those I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, my name is Holden Abdullah, and I have the privilege of helping manage the wine program here at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. My journey in wine has been anything but ordinary. It’s taken me from the rolling vineyards of Napa Valley to the limestone soils of the Texas Hill Country, and soon to the alpine landscapes of Austria.

My first introduction to wine came in Napa working at the legendary Chateau Montelena, an experience that shaped my understanding of what it means to make truly great world-class wine. I worked every stage of the process, walking vineyard rows in the cool morning fog, monitoring fruit through the growing season, sorting grapes during harvest, and following them through fermentation, barrel aging and bottling. One of the most impactful parts of that time was shadowing directly under Heidi and Bo Barrett. Observing their patience, precision and intuitive approach to winemaking left a lasting mark on how I see both the artistry and discipline behind every bottle. My time at Montelena taught me that exceptional wine begins long before it ever reaches a glass. It starts in the soil, the vines and the countless small decisions made along the way.

Returning to Texas, I joined William Chris Vineyards, a winery consistently named one of the Top 100 Wineries in the World. There, I deepened my appreciation for Texas terroir, how our climate, soils and native character shape wines with their own distinct voice that was closer to home, having been born and raised in the Texas Hill Country.

Before entering the wine world, I was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University, serving with the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, the Ross Volunteer Company, and later leading on Corps Staff. I graduated with honors, and the discipline, leadership and attention to detail learned in those years continue to guide how I approach every part of my work here at Cordillera Ranch.

This fall, I’ll be stepping away for a short but exciting opportunity, working harvest in Austria at Mayer am Pfarrplatz, who first opened their doors in 1683, and where Beethoven wrote his Symphony No.6! The region is celebrated for its organic, sustainable and precision-driven winemaking techniques, where I’ll be fully immersed in the vineyards and cellars. I will be learning how cool-climate growing conditions influence the balance, structure and longevity of the wines, and how generations of tradition can coexist with modern innovation. My goal is to return not only with new skills and stories, but with fresh inspiration for our program and, hopefully, a few Austrian bottles for us to share together. For those of you returning to Cordillera Ranch this fall, I will miss meeting y’all, but look forward to reconnecting when I’m back, ready to swap vineyard stories, share what I’ve learned, and pour something truly special.

What’s New in the Wine Program

Over the past year, we’ve been refining our offerings, streamlining processes, and expanding our cellar to reflect both the high standards of Cordillera Ranch members and the ever-evolving nature of the wine world. One of the highlights we’re excited to share is the arrival of Pride Mountain Vineyards to our lineup. Nestled high in the Mayacamas Mountains, straddling the Napa and Sonoma County line, Pride produces bold, elegant wines with a sense of place and undeniable character.

As part of keeping our program dynamic, a few of our long-standing mainstays will be stepping aside to make room for new vintages, varietals and producers. While it’s always hard to say goodbye to familiar favorites, we encourage you to give these new selections a chance. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised and maybe even discover your next go-to bottle. Our By-the-Glass program has been carefully curated to showcase a broader, more worldly selection, ensuring every pour is fresh, vibrant and served at its best. This approach allows us to introduce unique and limited offerings from a variety of regions more often, keeping the list dynamic and engaging.

Beyond what’s on the menu, our retail wine program continues to grow as a valued member benefit. Whether you’re stocking your cellar, preparing for a dinner party, or simply want a favorite label at home, we can source and order directly for you. With access to exclusive allocations and competitive pricing, our retail program offers the quality and service you expect from Cordillera Ranch, with the convenience of having it all handled for you.

Looking ahead, our event calendar is shaping up to be one of our most exciting yet. Expect seasonal wine dinners, curated tastings and visits from winemakers who will share not only their wines but also the stories, vineyards and passion behind them. These gatherings are a chance to expand your palate, meet fellow members, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with sharing great wine and popping a cork.

Here’s to raising a glass together this season, even if Mother Nature’s still deciding what season it actually is here in Texas.

Cheers!

While the calendar may say the seasons are changing, in Texas we know it might still feel like summer for a while longer. Even so, our wine program is embracing the shift, bringing fresh selections, new producers and exciting opportunities to enjoy what’s in your glass.

Living Longer or Living Healthier: Your Lifespan vs. Health Span

At Cordillera Ranch, we often talk about achieving new fitness goals and enjoying a round of golf, tennis or pickleball. These activities and so many others we do are central to a vibrant life here at the Clubs. But how do we measure the success of our health? Do we want to live longer and “survive” our life, or do we want to thrive? Some say we would like quality over quantity; I believe we can have quality in the quantity of years in our lives.

Welcome Letter

It’s Been a Year of Progress and Connection

As the days grow shorter and our community begins to sparkle with holiday lights, I wanted to share a quick note of gratitude and a few friendly reminders as we head into the season. This time of year always seems to bring out the best in people — more get-togethers, more shared meals and more neighborly help when it’s needed most. That spirit is what makes Cordillera Ranch such a special place to call home and, frankly, it’s not solely unique to this time of year.
