Casting a Dream: The Story of the Boerne Bass Club

By:
Jed Mazour, Boerne Bass Club

In 2018, a small group of kids, about a dozen or so, collaborated with Welton Pickering from Boerne High School about an idea to build a bass fishing team. With the help from Welton, the Digiosia family, the Kurtz family, Maryanna Pearson, the Mazour family and several more, it became a reality. Actually, it became a dream come true for many kids! The fundamentals and framework were set. The club was brought to life. Now it’s time to walk the walk.

The mission of the Boerne Bass Club is to create a sustainable bass fishing club for our area youth, keeping intact Christian-oriented ideals and guiding principles and in doing so, to develop future leaders in our community who have outstanding character, values and share a love for the outdoors.

Eight years later, that mission is alive and thriving. The Boerne Bass Club has had hundreds of kids come through this program! I want to be crystal clear about this message; this club is for everyone! You don’t have to be an athlete or a part of a special social circle to be accepted. This club belongs to every child that has a desire to be outside and explore — boys and girls, grades 6-12.

If you don’t have much experience fishing, even better! You can learn all you need from our coaches, your peers and some of our guest speakers. We create an environment that will help your children learn patience, good sportsmanship, experience public speaking, learn to socialize with new and different kids, engage in conservation and even dive into their faith!

We fish under two leagues: Faith Angler Network and Texas High School Bass Association. There are on average six tournaments a year in each league, plus the championship, and a few private tournaments. There is NO commitment. You can fish one or two, or you can compete in every one if you are able. This is at your own pace. But I will caution you! Your kids are going to love it and the desire to be a part of this group will grow as fast as a 250 HP Mercury on a lake at 6:00am. If you know, you know.

Although our 2025/2026 lake list is not out yet, our normal competition lakes include Travis, Canyon, Buchanan, LBJ, Amistad, Coleto Creek, Conroe and more. It is preferable that you own or have access to a boat. If you don’t own a boat or have access to one, you can look into renting options. Also, we do have a group of amazing volunteer boat owners that lend time to be boat captains. This allows us to give the opportunity to those kids without access and to get them on the water fishing.

We are extremely pleased to announce that through our main sponsor, Ron Hoover RV & Marine, we now have a new team boat! This boat’s sole purpose is to provide this opportunity to kids who wouldn’t normally have it. For kids who might need or deserve a little more in life right now, we are here for you! This isn’t just any boat, this is a custom-designed 2026 Caymas CX 21 Pro made specifically for the Boerne Bass Club!! It is basically the most beautiful thing on the water.

The Boerne Bass Club is a volunteer-run organization. We are funded by our amazing and generous sponsors, like Cordillera Ranch! If you feel the calling to be a volunteer boat captain or want to donate to our cause, please reach out, we would love to meet you! We want to preserve this club as long as we are able but it is going to take help and consistency from the community.

The story of the Boerne Bass Club isn’t just about fishing. It’s about community, character and a shared love for the outdoors. It’s about kids discovering who they are — one cast, one sunrise and one memory at a time.

Denise and I have been fortunate enough to meet every single child that has come through this program. It still amazes us to see them mature, develop their skills, and watch their personalities bloom! It’s something that touches our hearts dearly. Every time I mention this, I can see the smiling faces of so many kids over the years and remember some of the heartwarming things they have shared with us. Please, join us in our efforts to continue growing this organization for our area youth!
