Covering the entire palette of offerings, odds are that no matter what you’re in the mood for, there are some great local establishments featuring some amazing dishes. While most of these restaurants feature an upscale atmosphere that you might expect for fine dining, the Hill Country also features are great places that you might have overlooked.

After extensive research, we put together a list of 4 top Hill Country restaurants that you have probably missed. Their location might be a bit curious, their décor and atmosphere might not be what you would expect, but rest assured, these restaurants take cooking seriously. BUMDOODLER’S SANDWICH SHOP
An absolute staple in Boerne, Bumdoodlers has been whipping out made to order sandwiches for over 25 years. You might not think of a sandwich shop for a great dining location, but that just means you haven’t tried them yet.  Bring your appetite, as the portions are intense. And arrive early, as the lunch rush typically pushes the line out the door. That should tell you something about the quality.

MAC AND ERNIE’S ROADSIDE EATERY
Literally a roadside food stand that has become world famous. Located in Tarpley, the menu changes frequently and only features the ingredients that the chef has bought for that day. Dishes served on paper plates, and diners enjoy their meals on picnic tables. It has recently been featured on the Food Network, the Travel Channel, Texas Monthly, Southern Living and countless other media. It’s gourmet food in a rustic, warm atmosphere that can’t be missed.

HILL TOP CAFE
“Inconveniently located in the middle of nowhere…” but well worth the drive. People from all over flock to this converted roadhouse / gas station 10 miles north of Fredericksburg. A place where food and music lovers gather to enjoy the unique Hill Country ambiance. Make sure to save room for dessert. Their pies and cakes are made from scratch, mixed and rolled by hand. Break out the stretchy pants.

Great dining in Blanco? You better believe it. Located in the heart of downtown Blanco, it’s a one stop shop for entertainment, art and dining. Everything you could ask for in a wonderful, fun filled evening is right at your finger tips when you visit. Recently renovated to bring a touch of class to the otherwise laid back Hill Country mentality, their excellent and frequently changing menu will have you going back time and time again.
