Wine and Beyond…

By Jeffrey Cohen

Summer is here and the pool is in full operation so we have some new items to quench your thirst as well as tantalize your palates.

Firstly, we have brought in some Hard Seltzers which have been very well received. There are many flavors available that will rotate all summer. We have also brought in Guns & Oil American Lager which will surely run out each week due to its popularity. For the Oenophiles (Wine Lovers), and back by popular demand, we will be offering Moët Ice by the bottle and Whispering Angel Rosè by the glass!

As Independence Day approaches, you can be thinking about the Adult Capri Sun beverages which will be handed out in the early afternoon on the 4th of July. We will have the representative from Western Son Vodka sampling out a collection of their exceptional flavors. They have amassed a tremendous amount of press and are quickly climbing up the ranks in quantity sold. There is truly something for everybody at the pool this summer!

I am thankful to say that the attendance at our recent wine dinners has been on a gradual climb and has built up quite a momentum.

John Trant from Italics did a fantastic job going through all of the wines that were coming from Coombsville, one of the newest AVA’s (American Viticultural Areas). He walked us through the beginnings of the Martin’s (Proprietors) journey from humble South Texas grapefruit farmers to the largest grapefruit farmers to finally buying their land in Napa. Their wines are rich and sumptuous with a silky-smooth finish. Chef Isaac and his team again knocked the food out of the park!

The events that are up and coming will be our annual Taste of Spain and Paella night on July 20th. We will have wines from all over Spain to pair with the culinary delights. They will range from the Mediterranean coast of Rias Baixas and go inland to the fabulous Ribera del Duero and all the way to the east to Priorat.

The following week on the 27th of July, we will be featuring the wines of Augustin Huneeus, which consist of Quintessa, Flowers, Faust, Benton-Lane, Leviathan, and Illumination. This will certainly be an incredible wine dinner and most definitely will be sold out, so please, as soon as you see the email for the wine dinner, make your reservation.

The same is true with the wine dinner on August 22nd. TOR Vineyards is the vineyard of Tor Kenward. In the process of setting up his vineyard and learning for three decades about his land, Tor mentored under some of the finest minds that Napa Valley has ever had — Robert Mondavi, Andre Tchelistcheff, Warren Winiarski, Ed Sbragia and Maynard Amerine. Tor’s principal wine maker today is Jeff Ames who has spent time learning from many of the great winemakers. Tor Vineyards also houses one of the world’s 52 Masters of Wine in Matt Deller. Do not miss this one!!!

Lastly, just a reminder to tell you of the benefits of the Cellar Club.

Challenges. Opportunities. Moving Forward.

Fall has been a busy season for the Agronomy team. This important season kicks off after all the fun of the Ladies’ Ranch Roundup, when we begin our greens aerification process. At the conclusion of this process in October, we have now seen the extraordinary benefit of the deep vertical slicing (Graden device) coupled with the normal aerification of punching holes and backfilling with sand.

Bees and Golf Courses

A long-standing interest of mine has been the benefits of using honey and bee keeping. I have enjoyed honey since I was a child and there are many benefits of having honey in your diet. Honey contains a variety of nutrients, it’s rich in antioxidants and is better for blood sugar levels than regular sugar. Research has shown it to promote heart health, promote burn and wound healing, and help suppress coughing with children.
