Cordillera Ranch Rising Star

Name: Mason Farmer
Age: 22
College: Texas A&M University at Galveston
Major: Marine Engineering
Interests/Activities: Hunting, fishing, golfing.

What made you choose your major?
I chose my major because it sounded like something I would like and would potentially be good at. I did really well in math in highschool and I like to take things apart and see how things work, so engineering seemed like a perfect fit.

What do you want to do after you finish college?
After college I want to try and use my major and get a job in the engineering field.

What do you think is the #1 issue with the Gulf/oceans?
I think that one big issue is that offshore drilling has really slow down since the BP accident. Although the government has started allowing offshore drilling again not many permits have been issued to companies since the bp accident. If the permit process could be accelerated I think that it could stimulate more drilling to create more jobs and increase business along the gulf coast.

Where do you see yourself professionally in 20 years?
In 20 years I hope to be have a steady job in engineering hopefully designing and working on offshore oil rigs, piping systems, or ships.

How were you prepared for college coming out of BHS?
Coming out of BHS I felt I was pretty well prepared. I even still use many of the things I learned in high school especially my math and chemistry classes.

Bees and Golf Courses

A long-standing interest of mine has been the benefits of using honey and bee keeping. I have enjoyed honey since I was a child and there are many benefits of having honey in your diet. Honey contains a variety of nutrients, it’s rich in antioxidants and is better for blood sugar levels than regular sugar. Research has shown it to promote heart health, promote burn and wound healing, and help suppress coughing with children.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been around the game of golf. From watching golf tournaments on TV with my family to going out to the driving range with my dad during my High School years while on the Golf Team, everything I associate with golf has been positive. I decided to attend the University of the Incarnate Word and major in Fashion Merchandising with a concentration in Business. Fusing both my passion for fashion and love for the game of golf, the golf merchandising path was the perfect path for me.
