In late 2011, a dedicated group of local residents banded together to promote a new avenue for talent, and thus Boerne’s first and only professional performing arts organization was born…Boerne Performing Arts!!!
In the midst of their third season, this young organization has to date successfully presented The Ten Tenors, The StepCrew, Vienna Boys Choir, TAO: The Art of the Drum, Bowfire, Drumline Live, Celtic Nights. They are presently promoting their two upcoming events for 2014: Time for Three (March 25) and VocaPeople (October 23).
With the opening of the Boerne Independent School District’s second high school campus in 2007, emphasis was placed on the development of an extensive performing arts facility. Champion High School boasts a state-of-the-art auditorium seating approximately 985 that provides a clear line of vision from every seat in the house and has received accolades for its acoustics as well as its aesthetic qualities. Surrounding the auditorium are rehearsal facilities for band, orchestra, dance, choir and drama, in addition to a spacious and contemporary two-story lobby.
The partnership with Boerne I.S.D. has proven to be more than meets the eye. Boerne Performing Arts FOR KIDS has already positively impacted over 7,000 local students and is scheduled to reach an additional 2,000 students by the end of 2014. This program, totally funded through donations and sponsorships, is provided at no cost to the local youth.
The myriad of offerings to local students include special one-hour student performances presented by the visiting artist, master classes for the high school performing arts students that are taught by the visiting artists, and Pre-Concert Preludes and Art Galleries that highlight the local fine arts students. These educational opportunities introduce local youth to the arts and provide an experience that will hopefully nurture the artists and audiences of the future.
To maintain the educational outreach opportunities and enhance the number and notoriety of performances, the Boerne Performing Arts committee is embarking on a fundraising campaign for the first time in its short history. Their goal is to strengthen the organization, make it viable into the future, collaborate with the school district to supplement the quality and quantity of technical equipment at the auditorium, hire staff to support the volunteer base, and continue to create a first-class performing arts organization that is recognized throughout the State of Texas.
According to Carol Schultz, Chairperson of Boerne Performing Arts, locals once had to look solely to San Antonio to receive the cultural enrichment provided by these types of performances. “But, Boerne Performing Arts is in full bloom now and that is no longer the case,” she says. “Having six totally sold out performances in our first two seasons speaks to the craving our residents have for quality performing arts. The community has demonstrated a desire to reach beyond their Texas and U.S. borders to learn about different cultures.”
