As David recalls, his PBI journey began with a bit of suspense. He and four other coaches waited eagerly to learn which of 30 countries they’d be assigned to. The others got Dubai, Thailand and Mexico — not a bad gig. “I got Hawaii and felt like I won the lottery,” he laughed.

Hawaii wasn’t the only memorable stop. His time with PBI later took him to Singapore, where a chance introduction changed his life. “When I moved to Singapore, Novi was my upstairs neighbor’s best friend. I invited them over for Mexican food (which I made myself) on the 4th of July. They probably weren’t familiar with the holiday nor the food,” he joked. But it worked out — David and Novi were a perfect match. Today, they have a 7-year-old son, Nathan, and returned to Texas in 2022 to be closer to family.

Originally from McAllen, David grew up in Corpus Christi and later San Antonio. His love for tennis began early. “My love for the game took off in my elementary school years in Corpus Christi. My mom was the athletic director at Corpus Christi Athletic Club, and so I spent many hours on the courts there. I later played at Marshall High School in San Antonio.”

As for his early tennis heroes, he admired Pete Sampras (but not until later), Andre Agassi and Jim Courier — but when asked who he’d choose as a doubles partner, he didn’t hesitate: “Roger Federer, no question.”

Throughout his career, David has earned a reputation as a well-rounded racquet professional, accomplished instructor and thoughtful program developer. His coaching philosophy — Fun, Fitness and Knowledge — has guided him from the start. “At the core, it hasn’t changed, but I do get the opportunity to shape it in creative ways,” he said.

That philosophy carries naturally into pickleball, a sport he’s excited to see growing. “My background is in tennis, like most pickleball players. I enjoy the challenges and skill sets needed to be successful in pickleball. It’s certainly easier starting out, which is great for getting newer players. Transitioning from tennis isn’t difficult — the need for balance, footwork and good preparation is all the same. You simply adjust.”

What David enjoys most, though, is the community. “I’d say what I most enjoy about coaching in a club setting is the feeling of home. It’s a gathering place for all of us to see each other, have a chat and a sweat.”

Looking ahead, he’s eager to see increased activity across both tennis and pickleball. He believes Cordillera Ranch is the perfect setting for competitive and social play alike. David shared, “I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had throughout my career and proud of what we’ve accomplished along the way. I am very excited to join the Cordillera Ranch family and look forward to building upon the exceptional member experience that makes this Club so special. We will work hard to create a tennis program that offers something for players of all levels while continuing to grow the game of pickleball.”
