Welcome

welcome_charlie    There’s a common theme resonating around Cordillera Ranch these days: the #1. In recent years the golf course has been honored with accolades such as the #1 New Golf Course in Texas and hole 16 has been named the Best Hole in Texas by Dallas Morning News. A recent addition to the list of #1’s for Cordillera Ranch was being award as National Golf Course Owners Association’s “Golf Course of the Year,” a prestigious honor that you’ll read more about in this issue.
Sticking with the #1 theme at Cordillera Ranch, no golfer on the planet has been hotter in recent months than Cordillera’s resident PGA Tour professional, Jimmy Walker. After wrapping up his best season on Tour in 2013, Jimmy wasted no time getting his first career PGA Tour win at the season-opening Frys.com Open, firing weekend rounds of 62, 66. Jimmy wasted no time racking up wins number two and three of the season over the next few months and vaulting himself into the #1 spot on the FedEx Cup standings and amongst some impressive company. With the early season win flurry, Jimmy joined Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and David Duval as one of only four players to have won three times in the first eight starts to a season in the last twenty years- not too shabby of a fraternity. What’s exciting is to see what the rest of the year holds for Jimmy, who currently holds the course record of 63 at Cordillera Ranch. Jimmy’s worked hard for many years for this success so it’s well-deserved, and what’s been fun has been how the great members at Cordillera Ranch have rallied around him in support and how graciously he’s handled it all.
This brings us to our last #1: Clubs of Cordillera Ranch members. You won’t find a better group of members at any private club anywhere around the country. It’s an honor not only for Cordillera Ranch to be honored by outsiders in awe of the amenities, but the real satisfaction comes from the pride that so many of our great members have in the Club!! Thank you for all of your support.
Now let’s just hope that our list of #1’s goes on to be as lengthy of a list as local country legend and Cordillera Ranch member George Strait’s list of 60 #1 Hits -which is, of course, the most #1’s of all-time!

Regards,

Charlie Hill

Challenges. Opportunities. Moving Forward.

Fall has been a busy season for the Agronomy team. This important season kicks off after all the fun of the Ladies’ Ranch Roundup, when we begin our greens aerification process. At the conclusion of this process in October, we have now seen the extraordinary benefit of the deep vertical slicing (Graden device) coupled with the normal aerification of punching holes and backfilling with sand.

Bees and Golf Courses

A long-standing interest of mine has been the benefits of using honey and bee keeping. I have enjoyed honey since I was a child and there are many benefits of having honey in your diet. Honey contains a variety of nutrients, it’s rich in antioxidants and is better for blood sugar levels than regular sugar. Research has shown it to promote heart health, promote burn and wound healing, and help suppress coughing with children.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been around the game of golf. From watching golf tournaments on TV with my family to going out to the driving range with my dad during my High School years while on the Golf Team, everything I associate with golf has been positive. I decided to attend the University of the Incarnate Word and major in Fashion Merchandising with a concentration in Business. Fusing both my passion for fashion and love for the game of golf, the golf merchandising path was the perfect path for me.
