Cordillera Ranch member Jimmy Walker has been getting it done on the course at the Valero Texas Open for years, posting a win in 2015 and two top-5s in 14 career appearances.

For years, Cordillera Ranch – the community – has also been getting it done the week of the Valero Texas Open, both on its course and off.

The Club and community will host a Valero Benefit for Children golf event for the 11th straight year on Monday, April 6. The festivities begin at 8:30am with breakfast and player registration, followed by golf at 10:00am. Lunch and an awards reception will occur immediately after golf.

A year ago, Benefit For Children participants played 17 golf tournaments on 13 different golf courses, including Cordillera Ranch. The annual charity event featured approximately 2,600 attendees, and should top that number in 2020.

Proceeds from the remarkable Valero Benefit for Children event help children’s charities across the U.S. The result is a network of strong, well-supported agencies with the means to help thousands of disadvantaged youths. The Valero Benefit for Children, thanks to the generosity of many business partners and sponsors, supports hundreds of agencies that make a lasting difference in children’s lives.

The 2019 Valero Benefit for Children, together with the Valero Texas Open, generated a record $15 million in net proceeds for charity, once again making the Valero Texas Open one of the top charitable tournaments on the PGA TOUR. In the 97-year history of the tournament, more than $155 million in net charitable contributions have been distributed.

“Cordillera Ranch is one of our top sponsor courses and one of the most popular,” says Lillian Riojas, Executive Director of Public Relations and Creative Services at Valero Companies. “We have several top sponsors who request [playing] Cordillera Ranch every year.

“By far, the food is the most memorable on the hospitality side,” Riojas added. “We work with club’s food and beverage staff to design a terrific pre-round breakfast and post-awards dinner. They have always impressed our top sponsor guests.”

Cordillera Ranch is also one of the sponsors for the “Night to Honor Our Heroes” event on Friday, April 3. Beginning at 5:00pm at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, the Night to Honor Our Heroes celebration honors the active military representing all ranks and services, and wounded warriors. Guests will admire rare collections of military artifacts on display, and hear from engaging and moving speakers, all while socializing with military and business leaders in the community.

A year ago, former President George W. Bush entertained the crowd with funny and inspirational stories from his presidency and continued work with wounded warriors.

Those interested in purchasing a table or sponsoring the Night to Honor Our Heroes event can call 210.345.3847 or email Sales@ValeroTexasOpen.com.

“We try to partner with events and charities that will really make an impact on the local community in a big way and in a segment that we strongly support,” says Charlie Hill, President and Chief Operating Officer at DH Investments, the developer of Cordillera Ranch. “The military is just that – we have supported Military Warriors Support Foundation by hosting a fundraiser and have been a big supporter of Valero’s Night to Honor Our Heroes because it’s so important to continually and consistently support the heroes in Military City U.S.A. and around the world.”

Challenges. Opportunities. Moving Forward.

Fall has been a busy season for the Agronomy team. This important season kicks off after all the fun of the Ladies’ Ranch Roundup, when we begin our greens aerification process. At the conclusion of this process in October, we have now seen the extraordinary benefit of the deep vertical slicing (Graden device) coupled with the normal aerification of punching holes and backfilling with sand.

Bees and Golf Courses

A long-standing interest of mine has been the benefits of using honey and bee keeping. I have enjoyed honey since I was a child and there are many benefits of having honey in your diet. Honey contains a variety of nutrients, it’s rich in antioxidants and is better for blood sugar levels than regular sugar. Research has shown it to promote heart health, promote burn and wound healing, and help suppress coughing with children.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been around the game of golf. From watching golf tournaments on TV with my family to going out to the driving range with my dad during my High School years while on the Golf Team, everything I associate with golf has been positive. I decided to attend the University of the Incarnate Word and major in Fashion Merchandising with a concentration in Business. Fusing both my passion for fashion and love for the game of golf, the golf merchandising path was the perfect path for me.
